Three hospitals declare ‘Condition Snow’

Mar 13, 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. (3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13) – As the winter storm gained strength and South Dakota officials prepared to close Interstate 90, Regional Health hospitals in Sturgis and Spearfish joined Rapid City Hospital Wednesday in declaring "Condition Snow."

Under Condition Snow, staffing protocols and other measures are put into place to ensure there are enough caregivers on duty to take care of patients during the storm. Some will stay overnight or until relief caregivers can get to the hospital. All inpatient and emergency departments at Regional Health hospitals in Rapid City, Sturgis, Spearfish, Lead-Deadwood and Custer will serve patients throughout the storm.

Meanwhile, Regional Health clinics, urgent care services and hospital outpatient departments have been closed in Rapid City, Custer, Hill City, Hot Springs, Lead-Deadwood, Sturgis, Spearfish and Belle Fourche. Rapid City clinics will remain closed on Thursday. The other clinics and hospitals could close as well on Thursday, depending on the progress of the storm overnight.

The Dialysis Unit at the Flormann Street Medical Clinic in Rapid City is expected to reopen Friday. Regional Health has scheduled a make-up day for patients on Sunday, March 17. Patients receiving dialysis must have regular treatments.
